The marine yard developed in the 1800’s and grew over the years as the shipping companies enlarged their fleets. The largest companies being the City of Dublin Shipping Co, and the London & North Western company. The yard was the biggest employer of men in Holyhead in the 1900’s. All manner of trades were employed to maintain the vessels. The museum has a varied collection of tools that were used by the men. It also displays the craft of some of the trades such as ships joiners, metal workers and sail makers. A number of the volunteers once worked in the yards and tell most interesting stories to those visiting the museum.
